The Thin Place

In Lucas Hnath’s eerie play we meet Hilda, whose childhood lessons in clairvoyance from her grandmother made her a believer in “the thin place” – the almost-imperceptible space between our world and the world beyond. But those lessons terrified Hilda’s mother, who banished her grandmother and never looked at Hilda the same way again.

Decades later, Hilda’s mother has gone missing, and Hilda is still seeking answers about “the thin place” when she meets Linda, a professional psychic. The two become fast friends, and one night Linda invites Hilda to join her and her friends Sylvia and Jerry for drinks. The evening takes a turn when Sylvia accuses Linda of being a false friend and the truth about Linda’s psychic “abilities” comes to light.

With tensions running high, Hilda and Linda leave, and Hilda makes a split-second decision that will alter their friendship forever and bring us all to the edge of “the thin place” as the boundaries between reality and the unknown begin to splinter.
